It Was Turned Out To Be A Failure And Dropped Below 35 Million

Bougainvillea, starring Jyothimayi, Kunchacko Boban and Fahadh Faasil in key roles, it failed to make any impact during its worldwide theatrical release. Good numbers were coming in initially and it was expected to be a successful business given the controlled cost. But after the first few days it slowed down badly and consistently failed to capture footsteps. As a result, the worldwide box office gross remained below 35 crore.

The Malayalam psychological crime thriller directed by Amal Neerad was released in theaters on October 17. The film received mixed reviews from critics upon release. Even among the audience there was mixed word of mouth. These mixed reactions became a major hurdle for the film and its overall potential at the ticket offices was affected.

Less than a month later, Bougainvillea closed its run. It won only at the Indian box office 17.18 crore open. Accumulated including taxes 20.27 crore gross. Did a fair business in overseas market 16.50 crore gross. Combining the Indian and overseas grosses, its worldwide box office tally clocks in at exactly 1,500 metres. 33.68 crore gross.

Ideally, Bougainvillea should have reached the 50-crore mark worldwide but it ended its journey on a not-so-great note.

The film’s budget was reported to be 20 crore. So, there is a deficit of 2.82 billion dollars compared to the domestic collection of 17.18 billion dollars. A loser at the Indian box office!

Bougainvillea, meanwhile, draws inspiration from Lajo Jose’s novel Ruthinte Lokam (2019).
