Deputy Labor Commissioner in Punjab arrested on corruption charges

The computer operator has been arrested in a bribery case while a deputy labor commissioner has been transferred, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau said on Sunday.

Deputy Labor Commissioner Harpreet Singh has absconded, Punjab Vigilance Bureau spokesperson said.

The spokesman added that his office’s computer operator, Alka Sharma, was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000.

The case was registered on the complaint filed by Rohit Chauhan, a shop owner in Kashmir Bazaar in Hoshiarpur.

The complainant told the Vigilance Bureau that he was the owner of a jewelry store that he had recently renovated. He later received a notice from the office of deputy labor commissioner Hoshiarpur.

When he visited the office, computer operator Alka Sharma informed him that he would face a significant fine but that he could help resolve the matter by taking it up with his superior, Deputy Labor Commissioner Harpreet Singh.

The spokesperson said the complainant said that Sharma received the notice and went to Singh’s office.

Soon after, the complainant was also called to the office and Singh allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 for rejecting the notice.

The complainant recorded the conversation regarding the bribe request and submitted it to the office as evidence.

The spokesman said that raids were carried out at various points to capture Singh.
