One person died and many were injured in the shooting at Tuskegee University

One person was killed and several others were injured in a mass shooting Saturday night at Tuskegee University’s graduation ceremony at an Alabama HBCU in images filled with gunfire that rang out.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at West Commons, 1200 West Montgomery Road, one of the school’s apartment complexes.

The university told The Post that the victim was identified as a “non-university individual.”

Several people, including Tuskegee students, were injured and transported to nearby hospitals.

Macon County Coroner Hal Bentley he told AL.com He said “many people” were injured but could not provide detailed information.

Tuskeegee Police Chief Patrick Mardis said the injured included a female student who was shot in the abdomen and a male student who was shot in the arm.

“Some idiots started shooting,” Mardis told AL.com. “You couldn’t get emergency vehicles in there, there were so many people.”

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.

Tuskegee University is located approximately 40 miles east of Montgomery, Ala.

It was not yet known how many attackers there were. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made.

“It’s terrible,” said Mardis, the school’s former campus police chief. “I was on pins and needles the whole time I was there. You see this happening everywhere. “This happened everywhere but us.”

Hours before the fatal shooting, about 47,300 people packed Alumni Stadium, which has an official capacity of 10,000, for the university’s homecoming game against Miles College.

Last year, four people were injured in a shooting at an “unauthorized party” in West Commons, and school officials canceled classes. According to WSFA.

A student blamed university officials for security issues plaguing the school, allowing visitors to freely enter without being checked.

“It’s crazy that they say the party is not authorized to put the blame on us because even if it was an authorized party, it could have been the same thing with the security measures we have in place,” Mechel Winters told the press. .

“I was just expecting it to be a safe place because we are on campus and there should be safety measures in place,” he said.
