KINGSTON, Jamaica – Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren insists Marseille FC player Mason Greenwood wants to be part of the team and is hopeful the former Manchester United player will join the squad by March next year.

McClaren addressed members of the media at Saturday’s press conference, where he announced the 23-man squad for the Concacaf Nations League quarter-final match against the United States and urged patience in the process of acquiring the prolific striker.

“I’ve heard a lot of publicity about and around Mason Greenwood all the time,” he said, “I’m in constant contact with Mason, the message is always the same, ‘when the time is right’.”

Latest reports from England suggest that the 23-year-old, who has made one England appearance as a substitute against Iceland, is hoping to speak to newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel to gauge whether he has potential to play for the ‘Three Lions’. ‘

McClaren, who knows Greenwood from their time together at Manchester United, said: “You have to consider that he has gone through a traumatic period in his contract over the last two years and has been on loan. He’s been here, he’s been there, promotion and I think he just wants to settle in Marseille and enjoy the football he does and join the Reggae Boyz. “Every time I talk to him I know there is no reason to doubt that, and the process continues.”

After Greenwood missed an earlier opportunity to join the Jamaican team, McClaren said: “I didn’t expect any of these camps to be like this when you miss the first camp, but I’m hopeful that by March we will have made progress in everything. As I said, our whole project and process is with the World Cup qualifiers “It’s concerning, and I know it’s still on the horizon, but it’s still something we’re considering right now and planning for in the long term. So, Mason, we’re keeping an eye on it and keeping you posted on that.”
