Nneka Onuorah Talks About the Impact of Megan Thee Stallion Documentary

Nneka Onuorah takes us inside the inspiration for her newest documentary film, “Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words.”


Nneka onuorah reveals her Emmy-winning talent behind a new documentary aimed to introduce the world to Grammy-winning rapper Megan Pete, better known as Megan Thee Stallion.

Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words provides Unparalleled access to the woman behind the iconic personality. The documentary chronicles the Houston native’s path to stardom; It showcases her resilience as she deals with fame, loss, pressure, and success. It reveals Megan’s most vulnerable moments, giving fans an intimate look at the real Megan Pete.

Filmed over three years, onuorah stayed by Megan’s side while she was on tour, spending time with family, friends and fans, and coming to terms with the difficult fallout from the 2020 shootings that included the now-imprisoned artist Tory Lanez.

Megan made bold statements, revealing the layers of her life and personality that onuorah masterfully captured on screen, to share a story that women and girls can truly relate to.

“Megan Pete represents a counterposition to Megan Thee Stallion,” says onuorah BLACK BUSINESS. “We have the ultimate artist of feminist empowerment who is strong, represents women, and is strong for herself. Megan Pete is a young woman trying to figure this out. It goes through security vulnerabilities. This is the relatable human being inside Megan Thee Stallion.”

Onurorah continued. “And I felt like that was the untold side of Megan. And I think that’s also a side that a lot of women and girls can relate to, too, of grief, depression, going through traumatic events, and really just trying to navigate life by sorting through that.

The documentary follows Megan’s high-profile trial, which resulted in Tory Lanez being found guilty of shooting her in July 2020. In August 2023, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his actions.

Rumors about Megan’s relationship with Lanez circulated during filming, and when she was interviewed by Gayle King in 2022, she denied having an intimate relationship with the rapper. However, in the documentary, Megan confesses He told onuorah that she lied during the interview and that she had actually been with Lanez “once, maybe twice in one drunken night.”

When asked about the strong reactions Megan’s statement received online, onuorah celebrated the support the “Savage” rapper has received for her transparency and vulnerability.

“People have a lot of false narratives that they can’t see, but you can’t deny the images and what’s happening in real time,” onuorah said. “That’s why I was excited about it. And I’m so excited about what I’m seeing online.”

“I found that a lot of people were inspired by the empathy that this created, how Meg was more relatable because she was vulnerable and saw themselves in her,” she added. “And there was a lot of positive reaction and it was already a win because Megan won in the end.”

It’s not the first time onuorah has captured the life of a Grammy-winning artist into a captivating documentary. Lizzo’s direction in the Prime Video reality series Beware of Big Grrrls It won the 2022 Outstanding Competition Program Emmy Award, and onuorah won the award for Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program.

Her award-winning work on the documentary earned her a personal request for onuorah from Roc Nation He will direct Megan’s documentary. The Queens native expressed her gratitude for being chosen to lead the project after a humble start to her film career.

“It feels good to be respected in my craft, in my field,” he shared. I’m doing this. I am a self-starter. I didn’t go to film school. I am self-taught. That’s why it’s such a good feeling to know that walking according to my purpose is paying off.”

Onurorah continued. “The fact that I spend 99.9% of my time on my craft and building has brought me to this point. I can’t wait to see where else it takes me.”
