Summary

The Staff Accountant provides the organization with a solid backbone for all our financial, accounting, payroll and supporting administrative aspects. Working closely with CFAO and other key revenue and operations staff, they will join a friendly and dynamic team with cutting-edge thinking and execution in support of our mission. The organization, which employs about 30 employees in Vermont, has a budget of about $3.5 million.

  • Delivers on time, accurately, completely and effectively according to the highest ethical standards, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for nonprofit organizations and in accordance with the organization’s mission, values ​​and universal standards.
  • Accounting, bookkeeping and financial processes are accurate and up-to-date, and tasks are completed in a timely manner, including all sales and expense records, bank reconciliations, accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Personnel receive compensation, retirement contributions, social benefits and other payments accurately and on time.
  • Colleagues are effectively supported to ensure seamless interactions with donors, members, donors, and vendors.
  • Communication and interactions are timely and clear and aim to keep financial and accounting operations running smoothly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Finance and Accounting

  • Donors/Members: Use Stripe, Paypal, and other platforms to record and track all membership donations and major donor records.
  • Support the grant application process, tracking and accounting of general and limited funding when necessary; Collaborate with revenue staff for reporting
  • Sales invoice process for underwriting and listings; sales receipts for goods; Follow correct sales tax rules where applicable
  • Vendor invoices and payments using Bill.com working with CEO/CFAO for approval process
  • Monitoring cash accounts and receivables on a daily basis; Make weekly bank deposits
  • Payroll coordination and processing; payroll contact point
  • Accounting system: use QBO to record all financial transactions, process all invoices, process reconciliations, facilitate budget tracking, and maintain vendor and customer records
  • Process personnel expense reimbursements with documentation
  • Fill out vendor and supplier forms
  • Perform month-end closing and assist CFAO in producing monthly board financial reports
  • CRM Support: Use Salesforce CRM to record and keep up to date on relevant information to support the membership team
  • Audit Support: Provide all transaction data for annual audit and point of contact for external audit and tax firm with support from CEO/CFAO
  • Internal and external communications: Support and develop relationships with banks, members and donors by phone and email as necessary, and external providers for payroll, pensions and benefits

Operations

  • Secondary support for mail processing and office management
  • Assist revenue team members with meeting and event planning as needed
  • File and organize board minutes and materials
  • Assist with IT project operations when necessary

Position Requirements

Skill and Experience

Required for this position is at least 2 years of accounting and finance experience in a small to medium-sized non-profit organization. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to structure processes and establish efficient systems to support VTDigger’s continued growth. Consistency and accuracy with attention to detail. Experience and commitment to following careful procedures to protect the sensitive financial and confidential personal data involved in this role.

Excellent numerical skills and advanced spreadsheet knowledge. Learn quickly, be adaptable, flexible and able to work in the ever-changing environment of a growing organization. Take initiative and adopt a creative problem-solving approach. Well-developed interpersonal skills, working well independently and as part of a small team and collaborating well with colleagues. He brings a customer service-focused mindset to this job.

Coursework and/or educational degree in accounting strongly preferred; Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform this job. This position requires knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and QBO qualification. Demonstrates knowledge of accounting theory and practices for nonprofit organizations desired.

Working knowledge of Rippling, Salesforce, Stripe, Paypal and Bill.com preferred. VTVDigger is committed to supporting staff to reach their highest potential and there may be development opportunities.

Working Conditions

Work is performed both in our Montpelier office and remotely, such as from a home office. The ideal candidate will reside within a 30-45 mile radius of the Montpelier office and will be able to commute to the office approximately 1-2 days per week.

Physical Demands

The job involves performing most tasks in a sitting or standing position. There is potential for eye strain when reading detailed material on a computer screen. There may be some lifting, carrying and carrying duties within the office.
