Department of Human Services and Brickdam police bridge gap in domestic violence awareness

The Department of Human Services and Social Security’s Sexual Crimes and Domestic Violence Policy Unit recently conducted a sensitivity awareness session with 25 police officers from Brickdam Police Station.

Themed “Bridging the Gap,” this initiative aimed to improve law enforcement’s understanding and response to domestic violence cases.

The session covered a number of critical topics, including: Key concepts that require a comprehensive overview of the different forms of gender-based violence (GBV) and its impact on individuals and communities; client-centered approach, which focuses on the importance of taking a compassionate and empathetic approach when interacting with victims of domestic violence; protective orders under the Domestic Violence Act; contains guidance on the eligibility criteria for these orders and the special provisions available for the protection of victims; An introduction to the wide range of services offered by the department, including counselling, accommodation, 194 and legal charity and training on the new Domestic Violence Bill to assist with its correct use.

Following the sensitization session, MHSSS and Brickdam Police Station officers joined forces to organize a community drive on Leopold Street. This outreach effort served to raise awareness of the department’s services and strengthen police-community relations.

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, in collaboration with law enforcement, continues to strengthen its commitment to combating domestic violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of all Guyanese citizens. (DPI)
