Suspect arrested in killing of KwaDukuza traffic police officer

The 50-year-old man was killed last Monday.

It is understood the officer went to investigate a minibus taxi parked on the N2 near the Groutville off-ramp.

KZN police Robert Netshiunda said he was unaware a robbery was in progress and a suspect opened fire, killing Arumugam.

Netshiunda said the taxi driver got out of the vehicle and ran away, but the suspect then took the vehicle with its passengers to KwaDukuza and left it there.

“Intensive police investigations led the investigation team to the Thubelihle informal settlement in Melmoth, where the suspect was arrested. Follow-up investigations led police to the suspect’s residence in the KwaMashu informal settlement, where the murder weapon with its serial number was recovered. 32 rounds of ammunition were seized.

“The 27-year-old suspect will appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. On the same day, the suspect will appear in court once again in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court where he is charged with murder, car theft and armed robbery.” He will face charges.”
