Clashes broke out in Haiti’s capital as the prime minister was changing

As violence increased in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, on the day Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was to be appointed as interim prime minister to replace Garry Conille, clashes broke out between the police and gangs. The footage shows heavily armed police and civilians running away from the fire, while gangs are trying to take control of the main airport.

The transitional council’s appointment of Fils-Aimé, a businessman and former Chamber of Commerce president, comes amid a protracted democratic crisis in Haiti that has been worsened by gang violence and political infighting. Efforts to stabilize the situation, including mediation by the Organization of American States, have so far failed.
