Georgia Bulldogs Coach Kirby Smart on Colbie Young’s arrest

Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart said he and the football program will continue to support suspended receiver Colbie Young, a wide receiver who is facing charges related to an assault arrest.

Young was suspended indefinitely from the team in October after an alleged argument with his ex-girlfriend turned physical and led to his arrest. Latest reports indicate that his ex-girlfriend now wants the charges dropped.

Young’s suspension may be lifted once his legal case is resolved.

One interview with Sports Illustrated Coach Smart said this week: “The legal process needs to play itself out. We will continue to help Colbie in any way we can by allowing him to use the facility and exercise, but we must allow the legal process to play out.”

According to the arrest report, officers allege Colbie Young grabbed his ex-girlfriend and body-squeezed her as she tried to leave her home following an argument. The woman told police she felt Young intended to harm her, and the responding officer reported seeing bruising and redness on the woman’s body, which led Young to take her to the hospital. But in her affidavit, the woman retracted her initial statements, explaining that Young was not violent, did not touch her in an inappropriate or unwanted way, and did not cause any harm to her or her unborn child.

At this time, the Athens-Clarke County District Attorney has not indicated whether the charges will be dismissed.
