12-year-old girl arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after staff member was injured with ‘scissors’ at Newport Girls’ High School

Police and West Midlands Ambulance Service were called Newport Girls’ High School It occurred at around 14.25 on Friday, November 8, when a woman was slightly injured.

He told the Shropshire Star: “I can confirm there was an isolated incident at the school on Friday involving a pupil and a staff member. The staff member was treated in hospital and later discharged. The police were called and we are assisting them with their questions.”

“I would like to reassure students, families and staff that we take the safety and welfare of students and staff very seriously and that this is an isolated incident. “I understand this may be distressing, so additional support is available for any students or staff who require it.

“As this is an ongoing police investigation we cannot comment further.”

In a letter sent to parents on Saturday (November 9) and seen by the Shropshire Star, the headteacher asked pupils to refrain from discussing the issue on social media.

It said: “Yesterday afternoon, there was an isolated incident between a pupil and a staff member at the school, which left the staff member injured and receiving treatment in hospital. “The staff member was later discharged from hospital and I visited them today.

“Police have been called and the school is assisting with investigations. “As this is an active police investigation I cannot provide any further details at this time.

“Due to the sensitivity of the situation, I would ask that you speak to your child(ren) about avoiding discussing the issue on social media. I am aware of some messages circulating on platforms such as WhatsApp and have shared these with the police to assist with their investigations.

“Please be assured that this is an isolated incident. We take the safety and welfare of students and staff very seriously. I recognize this could be devastating and additional support is being provided to any staff or students who require it.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff and emergency services who supported the response to the incident. I am sure you will join me in sending our best wishes to the staff involved.”

Meanwhile, in a statement made by West Mercia Police, it was said: “We were called to Newport Girls’ High School at 14.25 on Friday following reports of an attack with scissors.

“The victim, an adult, suffered minor injuries during the incident. A 12-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and was later released on bail.”

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We were called to Newport Girls’ High School, Wellington Road, Newport, at 2.48pm on Friday, November 8.

“An ambulance arrived at the scene and attended to a woman with minor injuries. The woman was transported to the Princess Royal Hospital for further checks.”
