“I’ve never seen anyone this bruised, this bruised,” paramedic Eithne Scully told the Irish court, according to CBS News partner network BBC News, which also had a journalist in the courtroom.

Scully said Hand had a cut on his chin and bruises on his lower neck, as well as his chest, legs, buttocks and thighs.

The BBC said video of Hand being treated by Scully, showing some of his injuries, was shown to the jury.

The Irish Supreme Court began hearing evidence in the civil case last week. Under Irish law, unlike criminal prosecutions, in civil cases neither the accuser nor the accused has the right to anonymity.

Irish state broadcaster RTÉ reported that Hand had previously laid charges against McGregor in 2020 but the Director of Public Prosecutions refused to take on the case, deciding there was no reasonable prospect of convicting McGregor.

According to RTÉ, Hand, who took the witness stand last week, said that he was at a Christmas party in a hotel in Dublin in 2018, during which he consumed alcohol and cocaine with McGregor. Hand told the court that McGregor laid him on a bed in the hotel’s penthouse suite and that’s when he couldn’t breathe.

She said he bit her and then allegedly wrapped his arm around her neck and strangled her three times. Hand told the court she thought she would die and never see her daughter again.

Hand said she let McGregor do “whatever he had to do” to survive, at which point McGregor raped her, RTÉ testified.

Hand was accused by McGregor’s defense team of spreading a “web of lies” during cross-examination last week.

BBC News said McGregor’s lawyers accused Hand of attempted extortion in the civil suit. McGregor’s defense lawyer, Remy Farrell, said Hand told her then-boyfriend in the days after the alleged attack that McGregor had threatened to kill her.

Farrell said Hand omitted this detail in police interviews and pressed him on whether the allegation was true.

“Is this something that is or is it something that is not?” According to the BBC, Farrell asked him this question in court. Hand told the court she couldn’t remember whether she told her boyfriend at the time.
