Woodstock fire: 1 dead, dozens displaced as flames break out at apartment complex

More than 30 residents were displaced and one person died when a fire broke out at a two-story apartment complex in Woodstock late Monday.

The fire broke out around 22:13 in St. It broke out in the 700 block of St. John’s Road, prompting multiple 911 calls reporting raging flames and potential residents trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes to find intense flames engulfing the building and requested additional assistance.

The teams responded to the fire, which quickly spread to the attic and the entire building, from inside and outside.

The fire was brought under control around midnight, but firefighters remained on scene throughout the night to contain hot spots and secure the area.

The fire damaged 12 of the building’s 24 units, leaving dozens of residents homeless.

The American Red Cross is providing temporary shelter and basic assistance to those affected. 401 St. to support displaced residents. St. John’s Road A temporary relocation center was established at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Three people were taken to local hospitals. A man who suffered critical, life-threatening injuries was initially planned to be airlifted but was instead transported by ambulance to hospital, where he later died.

A woman and a baby affected by smoke were evaluated at the scene.

No injuries were reported from firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, Woodstock Police Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
