Beaufort Company woman sentenced to 20-25 years in prison for killing her husband

WASHINGTON, NC (WITN) – A Beaufort County woman was sentenced to 20-25 years in prison today after a jury found her guilty of second-degree murder.

Valinda Leggett was on trial for the murder of Greg Leggett.

The man was shot at the couple’s home on Mimosa Shore Road on July 3, 2020.

During the three-week trial, the woman claimed she acted in self-defense and that her husband was extremely drunk at the time. She stated that she shot her husband in the upper chest in the kitchen.

District Attorney Seth Edwards said they presented evidence that the victim inherited his parents’ inheritance just before he died and asked for a divorce from his wife just days before he was killed.

According to the statement made by the prosecutor’s office, the couple had been married for 20 years.
