Former Dixon school teacher arrested after allegedly paying students to have sex with him

DIXON, Mo. — A Dixon School District teacher was arrested by law enforcement on Tuesday, Nov. 12, on 19 charges, including statutory rape and sexual intercourse with a child, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD).

Online court documents state Carissa Smith is charged with the following crimes:

  • Eight counts of second-degree statutory rape

  • One count of second-degree statutory sodomy

  • Sexual harassment of a student twice

  • Three sexual contacts with a student

  • Two counts of second-degree sexual trafficking of a child under 18

  • An example of patronizing prostitution

  • Two charges hindering prosecution

Online court records say Smith started as a substitute teacher at Dixon Middle School in 2022 and 2023. He was later hired as a Paraprofessional at the high school for the 2023-24 school year and was later hired as a long-term substitute until his resignation. In August 2024.

After interviewing multiple victims, PCSD said Smith offered money to students in exchange for sex or oral sex, primarily at his home. One victim said she and Smith had sex when they were in middle school.

The probable cause affidavit also accuses Smith of providing marijuana and alcohol to his students, allowing them to smoke and drink in his presence, and sending inappropriate photos of himself to a victim via Snapchat.

Smith is currently being held in the Pulaski County Detention Center on $250,000 cash or surety. PCSD says he may face more charges after interviewing more victims.
