South Africa Partially Reopens Mozambique Border After Unrest – BNN Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) — South Africa began allowing some movement along its main border with Mozambique Thursday morning, following protests the day before that led to the suspension of protests.

Trans African Concessions, which operates the highway connecting South Africa’s industrial hub to the port of Maputo, Mozambique’s largest port, said cargo was not included in the resumption of crossings. South Africa is the world’s largest producer of chromium, a key ingredient in stainless steel production, and about half of its production is exported through Maputo.

Mozambique has been rocked by its worst election turmoil since its 16-year civil war ended in 1992, after opposition leader Venancio Mondlane claimed victory in an October 9 election in which official results showed the ruling party winning by a landslide.
