Delhi steps up pollution control efforts as AQI reaches ‘severe’ levels

With air quality entering the ‘severe’ category on Thursday, the Delhi government is stepping up pollution control measures under Phase II of the Progressive Response Action Plan (GRAP).

Environment Minister Gopal Rai has announced a series of enhanced enforcement actions aimed at containing rising pollution levels. Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 428 at 9amIt marks one of the worst reads in the country this season.

GRAP’s II. Under the phase, the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi is facing strict restrictions. The use of coal and firewood in commercial settings is now banned, while diesel generator sets are also restricted except for essential services such as hospitals and emergency operations.

The minister attributed the huge increase in pollution to stagnant weather conditions, including low wind speeds and a drop in temperature, which he said trapped pollutants over the city.

Even though the AQI had already touched severe levels on Wednesday, Rai said the implementation of GRAP Phase III was unnecessary as forecasts predicted slight improvements from Friday.

At a press conference, Rai highlighted the multifaceted sources of pollution in Delhi. Studies show that 30% of pollutants originate within the city, while 34% are attributed to emissions from the broader National Capital Region.

“The Delhi government will strengthen all ongoing campaigns to reduce pollution under GRAP II,” Rai said, noting that these efforts are vital to prevent further escalation to emergency levels.

Rai also announced plans to review and improve all existing pollution control initiatives. This will include intensified enforcement efforts, ensuring adherence to emission norms and coordination with neighboring regions to manage cross-border pollution.
