Marine Le Pen faces ban from 2027 elections in embezzlement case

French prosecutors in embezzlement case Marine Le PenFrance’s far-right leader has demanded that he be sentenced to prison and barred from public office if convicted, preventing him from potentially running for president in 2027.

The prosecution requested that all two dozen defendants be barred from public office for five years, effective immediately after the verdict, even though the defense team objected.

“The law applies to everyone,” prosecutor Nicolas Barret told the court as Ms. Le Pen sat in the front row of the defendants’ bench.

He added that the ban would “prohibit the defendants from standing as candidates in future local or national elections.”

He demanded a five-year prison sentence for Ms Le Pen, calling for at least two years of that to be a “convertible” sentence, meaning there would be the possibility of partial release.

The prosecution also demanded that RN be fined two million euros (£1.6 million) and Le Pen herself 300,000 euros.
