Who will replace Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan? Some names re-emerge as possible candidates

Mayor Mike Duggan’s time running Detroit is coming to an end.

He announced on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 that he would not seek a fourth term in office.

His current term ends in January 2026. Duggan is likely to launch a campaign to succeed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who is unable to run for re-election due to term limits.

Free birth control available at more than 300 locations in Michigan

Free birth control resources are now available at more than 300 locations through a program for Michigan residents.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that over-the-counter oral contraceptives, emergency contraception, condoms and family planning education resources are available through the Take Control of Your Birth Control program.

“Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their reproductive health,” Whitmer said. “With more than 300 locations in Michigan now offering free birth control, emergency contraception, and other essential reproductive health tools, we are taking action to ensure all Michiganders have the support they need. Decisions about reproductive health care are between the woman, her doctor, and her trusted community.” “In Michigan, we must always protect your fundamental right to control your health and your future.”

Man convicted of selling fentanyl that led to overdose death in Michigan

A man in Michigan was convicted of selling fentanyl to a person who later died of an overdose.

A federal jury convicted Antjuan Pierre Jackson, 39, of Kalamazoo, of distribution of fentanyl causing death and possession of 40 grams or more of fentanyl with intent to distribute.

Leonid meteor shower peaks as supermoon wanes

Seeing the Supermoon is a pleasure. But this brightly shining sphere will still be nearly full when the Leonid meteor shower reaches its peak this weekend, likely obscuring all but the brightest meteors at most locations.

The Leonids are known for their high-speed meteors that can reach speeds of up to 44 miles per second (70 kilometers per second).

“Unfortunately this year, viewing conditions will be affected due to the near-full moon,” said Shyam Balaji from King’s College London. “Viewing early in the morning, when the moon is lower in the sky, can increase your chances of seeing more meteors.”

This shower could result in approximately 15 visible meteors per hour under ideal viewing conditions.

This year’s busiest event will take place on Sunday, when the moon is 98% full. The rain will last until December 2.

Weather: Rainy Thursday across Southeast Michigan

This is a wet start! Take your umbrella. Plan for showers during most of the daylight hours today as the low pressure system moves west of us into Lower Michigan.

There is seasonally cool and widespread rain today. Highs will range from the upper 40s to around 50. Most of the rain will fall towards the northeast during the afternoon, but we can’t rule out a few isolated, stray showers on the trailing edge of the low tonight.
