Five-year-old Jisan joined her mother early this morning for the simple task of fetching tea and breakfast from a nearby hotel in Rampura district.

Overflowing with happiness and excitement, he was frolicking behind his mother, holding his two-year-old sister, Fatema Akter, with one hand and carefully balancing a cup with the other to bring tea just a few hundred meters away from the tin shack they had rented. In the Kunjaban area.

But little did they know about the tragedy that would strike them.

An old brick wall next to the street, weakened over time, collapsed and Jisan fell under the rubble.

Local people rushed to help, frantically lifting bricks to save Jisan. But it was too late now.

Jisan was declared dead by doctors when he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said his uncle Nayan Sarder.

Luckily, his mother and sister survived.

“Fatema was playing with a rattle toy. Suddenly the toy slipped from her hand and flew a few meters away,” he said.

“When Fatema reached for her, her mother Jhumur Begum came forward to pick her up. That’s when the wall collapsed and Jisan fell on top of her while she was near the wall,” Nayan told The Daily Star.

“The old wall stood there in a dilapidated state for a long time and posed a danger to everyone who used the street. Vehicles drive on it and people use it frequently… It’s a miracle that Jisan’s sister and mother survived,” he said.

Jisan’s distraught mother, Jhumur, was still unable to explain how it all happened.

“My children were having fun bringing breakfast and tea to the hotel. They like to accompany me in such situations. Suddenly the wall collapsed and my world collapsed within seconds,” she said as her husband Miraj Hossain tried to console her.

Ms Farouk, in charge of DMCH Police Station, said the body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Rampura police said the family did not want to file a complaint and wanted to collect the body before an autopsy was conducted.
