Murder case: Addl SP Alep Uddin arrested, detained

Former Barishal’s Additional Commissioner of Police Md Alep Uddin was cited as being arrested today in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station in connection with the death of Zobayer Omar Khan during the anti-discrimination student movement in Dhaka’s Jatrabari on August 5.

Although his name was not included in the initial intelligence report (FIR), he was shown as arrested in the case.

However, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sharifur Rahman remanded him in two-day remand after Investigating Officer Md Rassel Sardar, sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station, offered him a five-day remand prayer.

According to the remand application, SI Rassel said that a team of Barishal Police Detective Branch (DB) arrested him from Barishal city last night on the orders of senior officials. The initial investigation revealed his involvement in the murder, so he must be arrested to uncover vital clues in the case.

The defense filed an application seeking bail and cancellation of his client’s detention as his name was not included in the FIR. The SI added that he got involved in the case just to harass her.

However, the judge rejected the bail request.

According to the family, Alep Uddin was picked up from the office of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Barishal Police Area around 2 pm last Tuesday. His family has not been able to find him since then.

According to the case statement, Zobayer Omar Khan, who received information that Hasina had fled to India, attended the rally in Shahbagh on August 5. The police, who reached Shanir Akhra with him and many others, fired bullets, tear gas and stun grenades. Many people, including Zobayer, were injured in the attack.

When people rushed him to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, doctors declared him dead.

Zobayer’s brother, Zabed Imran Khan, filed a lawsuit against 127 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, on August 22.
