Marijuana smokers warned to keep their weed out of Baja California

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — According to police in Tijuana, three Americans are arrested every week for smoking or carrying marijuana.

Mexican Customs Director Alejandro Robles Segura in Tijuana says some people have also been detained at the border trying to smuggle marijuana into Mexico.

“We have encountered situations where average citizens, those without ties to organized crime or drug cartels, have been stopped with marijuana,” Robles Segura said. “These are young people who have dual citizenship or are able to cross the border legally, and when they return from the United States, they have marijuana on them that they purchased legally in California.”

Robles Segura warns people that it’s not just marijuana that’s illegal, but also vaping products with THC.

“People will be fined 80,000 pesos ($4,200) if they cross the border with marijuana products, marijuana or a kilo, it is illegal to import such goods, they can also be imprisoned.”

The Mexican Supreme Court recently ruled that it is unconstitutional to impose fines on people who possess less than five grams of marijuana for personal use, but Robles Segura said that penalty does not apply to the “importation” of marijuana.
