Deputies arrest school bus driver on multiple rape charges

COLESVILLE (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday the arrest of a school bus driver on sex crimes charges.

Byron M. Bump, 51, of Colesville, was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office said. He faces two felony rape charges and one felony attempted rape charge.

The office said earlier this week that detectives received reports detailing years of alleged abuse. The victims were young.

Bump worked as a Chenango Valley School District bus driver for six years, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The office said it was working with county officials to safely take Bump into custody. The district noted that Bump was placed on leave and removed.

The office said as of Thursday, evidence showed the charges against Bump were not related to his job as a bus driver or that the crimes occurred on school property or on the bus.

“I commend our Detective Division for their excellent police work in quickly eliminating this individual’s ability to cause further harm to these victims,” said Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar. “I would also like to thank the Chenango Valley School District and Superintendent Larry Dake for assisting with this investigation and taking swift action to protect their students.”

Bump was taken to Central Hearing at the Broome County Jail where he was remanded to the House of Correction.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 607-778-1196.
