One dead after stabbing at homeless camp in Southeast Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man is dead following a weekend stabbing at a homeless camp in southeast Austin, the Austin Police Department said Thursday.

Around 6:31 p.m., Nov. 10, APD officers responded to a call in the 1900 block of East William Cannon Drive for a report of a man “lying on metal bars on the ground and bleeding from possible stab wounds.” ” said the release.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 39-year-old Elijah Martinez on the ground “bleeding from a wound in his chest,” according to police. Martinez was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m.

According to police, the investigation revealed that Martinez was stabbed at a homeless camp next to the AutoZone. In the statement, it was stated that many people left the area after the stabbing incident. No suspects have been identified and police said no arrests have been made.

This was Austin’s 59th homicide being investigated, according to police.
