BC man pleads guilty to assault, threats and robbery charges

Robert Sutherland was also charged with using an imitation weapon and assault with a weapon.

A BC man has pleaded guilty in Vancouver Provincial Court to menacing, robbery, assault, weapons and assault charges.

Robert Sutherland’s lawyer, Samantha Purton, made her submissions to Sutherland’s agreement by video link before Judge Eugene Jamieson.

All charges stem from events that occurred in Vancouver on October 16, 2023.

The weapons charges included using an imitation weapon and assault with a weapon.

Jamieson accepted the plea and said the particular circumstances of the events would be needed as the case progressed towards sentencing.

The judge granted Purton’s request for a pre-sentence report that included a Gladue component; this report was an assessment to profile certain background details of Indigenous offenders as outlined by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Sutherland’s next appearance will be on January 9.
