A Virginia woman was caught impersonating a registered nurse for a month while allegedly working at multiple hospitals in California, overseeing the care of nearly 60 patients.

Amanda Leeann Porter, 44, was arrested by the Burbank Police Department on Tuesday after it was discovered she was allegedly posing as a nurse at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Los Angeles County, KTLA. reported.

Porter cared for about 60 patients at the hospital and collected two paychecks between April 8 and May 8 before staff discovered she was impersonating a real, registered nurse who was not based in California, according to the department.

The hospital later fired the scammer and reported his actions to authorities, according to KTLA.

The LA County District Attorney charged Porter with three felonies Tuesday: identity theft, false impersonation and grand larceny.

Detectives said he was arraigned Wednesday and is being held without bail at the LA County Central Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.

During the investigation, the Burbank Police Department discovered that Porter had previously posed as a nurse.

The Burbank Police Department revealed that the LA County Sheriff’s Department arrested Porter at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita on suspicion of committing a similar crime.

However, Porter posted bail and was released from the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Burbank Police Department Detectives’ investigation revealed that Porter was believed to have obtained employment at numerous local hospitals around California using a variety of false identities.

Detectives believe other local hospitals hired Porter after he allegedly used a fake ID.

Investigators urged anyone with information about similar incidents in Southern California to call local law enforcement or the Burbank Police Department.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital told KTLA that Porter’s work is in a trial phase and that he is supervised by a qualified teaching nurse during this time.

Officials from both hospitals said it quickly became clear that the care Porter provided while fraudulently securing short-term employment at their facilities fell short of what was expected of a registered nurse.

Both hospitals said they informed all the patients they care for about the incident.

Detectives told Los Angeles Times Porter is also on federal probation for a fraud violation in Virginia.

according to US Department of Justicea woman named Amanda Porter-Eley, who matches the suspect’s age and is also referred to as “Amanda L. Porter.” court recordsIn 2017, she pleaded guilty to impersonating a nurse and committing bank fraud in Virginia.

Prosecutors said Porter-Eley used the identity of a nurse living in New York to get a job at Virginia Hospital in September 2015.

She was found guilty of working as a nursing assistant at that hospital without the necessary licenses for six months before being fired.

Porter-Eley continued to use the real nurse’s identity until she was arrested in September 2016, costing banks and retailers more than $120,000 in losses.

During this time, he fraudulently opened multiple bank accounts and obtained more than $450,000 in cash, loans, goods and services, including at least three vehicles and one property, under the stolen nurse’s identity.

Porter-Eley also pleaded guilty to opening bank accounts using other people’s Social Security numbers; where prosecutors found he obtained approximately $50,000 in worthless checks.

The Burbank Police Department has not confirmed whether Amanda Leeann Porter and Amanda Porter-Eley are the same person as the investigation continues, the LA Times reported.
