Inquest opens into Suzy Lamplugh murder suspect John Cannan

Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire district coroner Lorraine Harris told a five-minute hearing that the cause of death was a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

He said Cannan had been identified by prison officer Gary Stockdale and various reports would be prepared ahead of a full investigation, whose date has not yet been set.

Cannan was sentenced to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of the factory manager, Mrs. Banks, and two more rapes.

He was arrested 11 days later in Birmingham, where some of Ms Banks’ belongings were found.

His body was later discovered in a stream in Somerset.
