The height of stupidity! Two women risking their lives sit on the edge of 150ft collapsing cliffs and watch the sunset just weeks after the massive rockfall

This is the heartbreaking moment two young women carelessly risked their lives by sitting on the edge of a 150-metre-high collapsing cliff, just weeks after a massive rockfall.

The two unidentified women could be seen arm in arm as they sat uncomfortably close to the dangerous cliff edge to watch the sunset.

According to them, the part of the cliff in West Bay on which they sit is a ledge with a large crack extending down from the brittle cliff face below.

The incident occurred three weeks ago when a 15-metre-wide section of the cliff collapsed, sending hundreds of tonnes of rock crashing onto the beach below.

The 180-million-year-old cliffs famous for starring in ITV crime drama Broadchurch regularly experience rockfalls, with seven of them recorded this year alone.

The crevasse in which two unaware women sit indicates that this may be the next piece of the rock to collapse.

Although there are warning signs in the area urging visitors to stay away from the edge, people continue to brave the scenery to enjoy it.

A local who saw the duo on the edge of the cliff slammed the duo and said everyone knew ‘how dangerous and unstable cliffs can be’.

The local resident added: “These two young women were sitting on one of the most remarkable cliffs.

‘On a part of the cliff very similar to the piece that broke off last year.

‘More signs probably need to be placed on the cliff to warn people not to risk their lives.’

Hundreds of tonnes of rock crashed onto the beach at West Bay on October 17, pushing the greens of Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club treacherously close to the shore.

Coastal erosion and extreme weather events are battering iconic cliffs, creating unpredictable rockfalls and landslides in areas where summer sunbathers and hikers flock all year round.

Experts warn that the thousands-ton cliff could suddenly collapse at any moment and bury everything in its path.

Sam Scriven, head of heritage and conservation at the Jurassic Coast Trust (JCT), which looks after the UNESCO World Heritage Site, told MailOnline: ‘I never knew there were more rockfalls and incidents there than last winter.

‘This really surprised me as almost every area has had some sort of incident.’

He added: ‘It gives you a pause to think about what’s in store for you this winter or the winter after.’

There have been dozens of landslides and rockfalls on the Jurassic Coast since the last death occurred in 2012.

Charlotte Blackman, from Derbyshire, was crushed to death when 400 tonnes of rock suddenly collapsed from a 50m cliff near Burton Bradstock, three miles east of West Bay beach.

The 22-year-old was walking on the beach with his family when the tragedy occurred.

MailOnline analysis shows that nearly 30 per cent of the 137 incidents that the JCT says make up the ‘beautiful coastline we see today’ occurred within the same five-mile stretch.

The British Geological Survey, which records landslides, said the actual number of incidents since 2012 may be higher because it only followed events for which it was warned.

Following the wrath of Storm Kathleen in April, two major rockfalls occurred in the area between West Bay and Burton Bradstock.

Thousands of tonnes of rock have broken away from the cliff, and aerial photographs show a 50ft pile of debris filled with boulders the size of a double-decker bus.

MailOnline has approached Dorset Council for comment.
