Olievenhoutbosch man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his stepdaughter

Olievenhoutbosch man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his stepdaughter

A 50-year-old man was sentenced to three life sentences for repeatedly raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

The Pretoria Magistrates’ Court announced its decision on 11 November, deciding that the sentences would be carried out simultaneously.

Accordingly National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana concluded the man was unfit to own a firearm and his name was added to the National Sex Offenders Registry.

Mahanjana said the abuse occurred over several years, from 2013, when the man was in a relationship with the victim’s mother, until their separation in 2020.

He said the three incidents took place at the man’s home in Olievenhoutbosch while the mother was away.

“On October 12, 2018, while the victim’s mother was on her way to the hospital to give birth to the child she shared with the man, the man forcibly removed the victim’s clothes, prevented her from screaming, and then began raping her.”

Mahanjana said the second incident occurred in July 2020 when the victim’s mother went to visit her mother.

“The victim was left in the care of the stepfather, who returned home drunk that night.”

She said the man was eating dinner when he got home and went to the room where the victim was sleeping and raped her again.

“He then threatened her, saying she would be homeless and starve to death if she reported the attack,” he said.

The last incident occurred the same year, after the mother ended her relationship with the man.

“On the day of the incident, the victim and his younger sibling were left in the man’s care while he visited his maternal grandmother.”

Mahanjana said the stepfather raped the victim once again but revealed his trauma after his mother noticed the injuries during bathing.

“The mother noticed flesh coming out of the victim’s private parts and asked her what happened.

After pressuring her further, the victim eventually told her mother what her stepfather had done.”

The mother immediately reported the assaults to the police, which led to the man’s arrest later the same day.

The stepfather denied the accusations and denied raping the victim.

However, Prosecuting Attorney Emile van der Merwe presented compelling evidence, including statements from the victim and other witnesses proving that the man had indeed raped the child.

During the sentencing, Van der Merwe described the man’s actions as appalling and a breach of the trust placed in him as a parental figure.

“He was trusted, but instead he abused and raped the child.”

The judge agreed, stating that the man raped someone who called him “dad”.

He said he could find no compelling reason to deviate from the minimum sentence set.
