Chenango Valley bus driver arrested on multiple rape charges

TOWN OF COLESVILLE (WIVT/WBGH) — A Colesville man who worked as a Chenango Valley Central School District bus driver for six years has been arrested and charged with multiple rape charges based on “years of alleged abuse” of multiple children. Broome County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers worked with CVCSD officials on Thursday, Nov. 14, to safely take Byron Bump, 51, of Colesville Township, into custody. In accordance with district policy, Bump was immediately placed on leave and relieved of his duties.

Officers say at this point in the investigation, none of the charges are related to Bump’s job as a bus driver or that any of the alleged crimes occurred on school property or on the school bus.

Following his arrest, Bump was charged with the following charges:

  • 1st Degree Rape, Class B Felony

  • 2nd Degree Rape (Victim Under 15), Class D Felony

  • Attempted Rape 2nd Degree (Victim Under 15), Class E Felony

“I commend our Detective Section for their excellent police work in quickly eliminating this individual’s ability to cause further harm to victims. I would also like to thank the Chenango Valley School District and Superintendent Larry Dake for assisting with this investigation and acting quickly to protect their students,” said Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar.

Bump was taken to Central Hearing at the Broome County Jail where he
He was sent to the Penal Institution.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
