Trump head of Defense Department accused of sexual assault in 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) — Popular Fox News host Pete Hegseth, who was nominated by Donald Trump to head the Department of Defense, was accused of sexual assault after he spoke at an event for Republican women in Monterey, California, in 2017, according to a statement. City of Monterey officials said they are keeping further details in the police report confidential because it contains analysis and conclusions from law enforcement officials who are exempt from release under the state public records law.

At the time of the alleged attack in 2017, Hegseth, now 44, was in the process of divorcing his second wife, with whom he had three children. According to court records and Hegseth’s social media posts, she filed for divorce after having a child with her now-husband, a Fox News producer. Trump’s transition spokesman, Steven Cheung, said in a statement that the president-elect “nominated highly qualified and highly qualified candidates to serve in his Administration.”
