U of A students take advantage of new tools of the tech trade

Artificial Intelligence Core It is a workforce development program offered at the University of Arizona. Students are paid to develop AI solutions.

“The first layer is the class where they explore databases, AI integrations, and virtual reality,” said AI Core Director Ash Black. He also co-teaches the classroom.

Taoseef Aziz is currently a student of AI Core. “This is a field where consumer science students can work with their faculty to investigate how consumer behavior changes depending on how they structure the field,” Aziz said.

Lundgren talks about the creation of a ‘digital twin’ of the Consumer Science Lab.

Taoseef Aziz demonstrates the Lundgren Consumer Science Laboratory’s digital retail offering.

Black explained that this ‘digital retailing’ can help analyze what people stop to look at when they enter the store.

There is also an Artificial Intelligence Assistant, Andres, in this digital retail version of the retail store.

“Andres will be the interaction side of the business and the overhead cameras will be the data analytics…so two different aspects of AI,” Aziz explained.

Kashyab Whydle is a data science student at the U of A and also part of the AI Core Programme. “The ability to take in information and produce results so quickly is truly fascinating to me,” Whydle said.

Black also stated that artificial intelligence could pose a danger if misused. This could possibly lead to debilitation, he explained, “You let the AI do so much work for you that you become unable to do simple tasks like getting up from a chair.”

But he doesn’t think that should stop students from using it. “If we tell our young students not to use AI, which is crazy because it’s so powerful, I can’t imagine we’re providing them with a service,” he explained. “Yes, they have their drawbacks, but they need to learn how to use them.”

Black encourages all UA students, regardless of their major, to take classes if they are interested in artificial intelligence. He said AI Core also recruits, and they typically hire students after they complete the course.
