Ghana Women Entrepreneurship Summit 2024 was held

The 2024 edition of the Ghana Women Entrepreneurship Summit (GWES), dubbed Market Queens Summit Edition, took place at the Accra Digital Centre, with the theme “Building Market Women for Prosperity”.

This year, the summit, an initiative of the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA), aimed to address the challenges faced by market women while promoting resilience, empowerment and sustainable growth among female entrepreneurs in Ghana.

The event started with a warm welcome speech by GEA BizBox National Project Coordinator Antonia Ziga, followed by a statement of purpose by WeRise Network/SheHub National Project Coordinator.

The highlight of the summit was the opening speech by Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprise Agency.

In her opening remarks, Ms Yankey-Ayeh highlighted the vital role market women play in Ghana’s economic environment.

She expressed her personal connection to the cause: “The reason why the problems of market women are so valuable to me is because my grandmother was a market woman. She was able to care for her children and ensure that they all successfully completed their education. Many take your business for granted, but it is not an easy task; It’s a big job. “If you don’t sell in the market, who will?”

He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting women in the market and noted President Akufo-Addo’s determination to include them in national development plans.

Ms Yankey-Ayeh also acknowledged the challenges faced by market women, such as limited access to finance, inadequate market infrastructure, childcare issues and the desire of many to improve their skills.

He assured attendees that the summit would address these concerns while providing an opportunity for networking and knowledge sharing.

A versatile program combining business insights with health and wellness education was presented at the summit. Market queens and exhibitors attended sessions focusing on healthy living under the theme “Health and Wellness for Success”. Topics covered included management of blood pressure (BP), diabetes, fibroids, and cancer.

Attendees had the chance to interact with medical professionals, get advice and share their concerns. Health experts include Shapes Healthcare Specialist Medical Center CEO Dr. Promise Sefagah; Naana Akyaa Asante from Embrace Society; and Isabella, founder of Isabella Health Services.

Empowerment Through Entertainment

In addition to learning opportunities, there were also moments of relaxation and friendship at the summit. Market women enjoyed music, dancing and networking activities, creating a lively atmosphere that blended business and pleasure.

The Ghana Women Entrepreneurship Summit was established years ago to address the unique challenges women face in business. The Ghana Enterprise Agency continues to support the cause of women entrepreneurs through initiatives such as GWES, empowering them to succeed in their ventures and contribute significantly to national development.

This year’s event reaffirmed the importance of market women in Ghana’s socio-economic framework, encouraging dialogue and solutions that will support their growth and sustainability.
