Death in Columbus Demorest Road shooting: 2nd juvenile suspect arrested

A second juvenile suspect has been arrested in northwest Ohio in connection with a deadly shooting A 19-year-old man was killed on Columbus’ West Side on November 3.

Columbus police said Saturday that officers assigned to the United States Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested the 17-year-old West Side resident in Lima. Dispatch is not naming the suspect at this time because he appears to be facing juvenile charges, but could face more serious, adult charges once prosecutors review the case. It was not immediately clear when officers arrested him.

This is the second arrest in the Nov. 3 shooting death of Gene Sutton, 19, of the North Side, who officers found suffered a gunshot wound in the 1400 block of Demorest Road just before 3:20 p.m. Dispatch previously reported. Franklin Township paramedics took Sutton to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he died at 3:47 p.m.

On Monday, The Dispatch reported that police had arrested another 17-year-old suspect in connection with Sutton’s death.

Columbus police allege security footage shows Sutton meeting at least two men in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 1400 block of Demorest Road. Police allege that at one point one of the suspects shot Sutton, who fled north on Demorest Road in a burgundy Ford F-150 pickup before losing control and crashing into a bridge just south of Bonnie Court.

Police allege witnesses saw two suspects and a third male running toward the Post Oak Station apartment complex next to the shopping center on the west side of Demorest Road.
