The woman who applied for hurricane disaster assistance was arrested

BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – The Bradenton Police Department arrested 44-year-old Veronica Torres for filing a fraudulent application for hurricane disaster assistance.

Torres used her mother’s name, driver’s license and social security information to apply for the City of Bradenton Hurricane Disaster Assistance Program, claiming she had to move from her home due to hurricane damage. His claim for approximately $7,967 was approved.

But when Torres tried to pick up the check on Nov. 14, a City of Bradenton employee noticed that she looked much younger than the woman in the ID listed on the benefit application. When his explanation of “Botox treatments” failed to convince the employee, Torres was asked to return the next day and the Bradenton Police Department was notified.

When Torres returned on Nov. 15, he was questioned by Bradenton Police detectives and subsequently arrested. Torres is now charged with submitting a false claim for public assistance, a third-degree felony.
