‘If a white person had these views they would probably be in prison’

Badenoch fears Reeves won’t reverse the policy “because they’ll want to save face” and worse, “he’ll come back for more.”

He says Labour’s figures do not add up and that unless serious growth is predicted, businesses will close, the tax base will shrink and taxes will rise again to fill the gap.

“All of his bad decisions will affect my life and the lives of all your readers. “I don’t want Labor to fail because that will be bad for all of us.”

The reintroduction of agricultural property relief for inheritance tax is one of several applications. Nailed policies Badenoch has so far announced that VAT on private school fees will be abolished.

“When they announced Budget, I realized that most of them had never done business before, had never had to hire anyone,” says Badenoch, who worked as an assistant manager at private bank Coutts before becoming an MP in 2017.

“I’ve had to employ people and I know how much National Insurance contributes to the cost of business and it makes you think differently.

“If you watch the budget, there was a sharp gasp on the Conservative Party benches when it announced employer National Insurance contributions (increases). We’re all like ‘What?’ we asked.

“And when you looked across the street the Labor people were all grinning. They were grinning because they didn’t understand. They just thought, ‘Yes, greedy businessman, we will get some of the money.’ “And I thought, ‘They don’t understand.'”

He says they don’t understand, charities, GPs, nurseries, universities, councils, care homes etc. more employers It will be affected by employment tax, and additional payments towards childcare costs will be “all wiped out” by rising prices, for example.

“I’ve never seen a Budget like this before, one that managed to upset every group you can imagine, and the only ones who seemed happy were the unions,” he says.

The budget may have done Badenoch a favour. He admits that in recent years we have “shown no difference” between the Conservative Party and Labor, meaning “people think we are the same”. Just different faces.” But the Government’s ill-considered Budget is already giving Badenoch the chance to show where the big differences lie. “Authentic conservatism is coming back; not micropolitics or managerialism, but value-based conservatism. “We are very, very different,” he says. “And I want people to know that.”

Badenoch itself is certainly different. The fact that it was the Conservatives who elected the first black leader (and fourth woman) of a major party, while Labor remained beholden to middle-aged white men from north London, has angered some on the Left so much that they cannot contain their anger.

Dawn Butler, Labor MP for Brent East, tweeted saying Badenoch represents:white supremacy in black faces”.

“If a white person held these views they would probably be in jail or get a phone call from the police,” Badenoch says. other people live for tweets.

“I also think it’s out of jealousy that we’re doing something that they and the so-called progressive party have never been able to do.”
