Treyarch Returns Missing XP Tokens to ‘Black Ops 6’ Players Due to ‘Game Stability’

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Season 1 went live on Thursday, with players excited to find all their XP Tokens from previous seasons. Call of Duty The games are back in their inventory. Suddenly, the grind didn’t seem so scary. We can gain prestige and pop a 2XP Token and get back to those levels much faster. Weapon leveling suddenly wasn’t such a pain.

Then on Saturday all the XP Tokens had disappeared. I wrote about this yesterday, noting that Treyarch and Activision squandered a lot of their community’s goodwill in the processeven though you can still enable tokens War Zone (unless it’s installed, of course).

Today, Treyarch tweeted that XP Tokens would be returning, stating that the reason for their removal was “game stability.” Whether this is entirely the case or whether this is a clever response to the online backlash is something the community will certainly discuss. Either way, it’s the right and smart move. Although the tokens have not yet returned to players’ inventory, the studio promises more news next week.

The tweet reads:

With the launch of Season 01, a UI bug allowed players to activate legacy XP tokens in Black Ops 6. Unfortunately, it introduced some potential risks to game stability, which is why it was patched yesterday.

We know how much players appreciate being able to use their old XP tokens in both BO6 and Warzone, so we’re currently testing a way to properly implement this change in a future update. This gives us time to ensure stability is maintained before reintroducing this feature.

Meanwhile, players will be able to activate any old XP token in Warzone. Tokens applied in Warzone will also apply to Black Ops 6 if you change titles or modes.

We look forward to sharing more information about this change next week. Thank you for your patience.

As you can see, we have very little information on the details here. It remains a mystery what kind of “potential risk to game stability” the return of tokens actually threatens. I certainly don’t understand the backend stuff well enough to speculate, but if there is truly a threat to the stability of the game it’s best to remove them.

Combining so many games in a single container Call of Duty The experience must be a huge headache with all sorts of minor issues popping up, and considering that these occur accidentally, caution may be the best approach. Too bad this wasn’t communicated in the first place, but here we are. I guess that’s beside the point after all. All in all it was a good decision and I’m happy the tokens are coming back. Hopefully we’ll find out soon when that will happen.

PS I had my first hard crash while playing the game yesterday. Blue screen of death. Otherwise it has been performing quite well since its launch. I’m not sure if this was update or graphics driver related, but I had literally activated three 1-hour XP tokens and lost about ten minutes getting everything working again. I really wish Activision would make the most sensible change: Make XP Tokens only work during matches, not during load times, lobbies, or when the game is closed.
