What’s Up with All the Different Kindles? Every Kindle Type Explained

Amazon’s Kindle line has evolved significantly over the years. Nowadays, there is a device suitable for almost every type of reader. So what’s different about each Kindle and which one is right for you? Let’s break it down.

Amazon Kindle

Classical Ignite It sits at the bottom of Amazon’s Kindle portfolio. It is the most affordable and compact Kindle you can buy. a great starter eReader for most people. It’s also largely low-key but still quite capable. Kindle comes in a 6-inch black and white package E-ink screen With 300 ppi resolution and 94 nits built-in front light peak brightness. It’s perfect for reading e-books and has an anti-glare coating for better visibility in the sun.

Weighing just 158 grams, it’s lighter than most modern smartphones, and combined with its compact design, it’s small and light enough to easily fit in your hand or bag.

While you can get a larger screen on other Kindle models, you won’t get higher brightness or resolution. But there are plenty of other areas where it falls behind the rest of the Kindle lineup. For example, if you read for about half an hour a day, it can only last up to six weeks on a single charge. It also lacks dust or water resistance, wireless charging support and warm light features. Also, you’re missing out on the light sensor and front-aligned design.

Moreover, there is only a 16GB storage option, but this is not a problem for most buyers as it can store thousands of e-books. Speaking of e-books, the Kindle offers access to the same impressive collection of e-books through its store as other more expensive Kindles.

The regular Kindle may seem like a barebones eReader, but it can hold its own in terms of e-reading basics with pricier Kindles.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Amazon

The Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon’s most popular Kindle, and for good reason. It has a sleek and modern design with a 7-inch black and white E-ink display that sits flush with the bezels. It has the same resolution and brightness as the regular Kindle. However, it offers the best contrast ratio among all Kindles, making text appear clearer and sharper. It’s also the fastest Kindle in the company’s portfolio, with faster page turns and an overall more responsive experience.

Another great feature of the Paperwhite is its 12-week battery life; This is in line with the best battery life you can get on any Kindle. So unless you spend hours every day on your Paperwhite, it will last for months on a single charge. Also a IPX8 rated construction for water resistance, allowing you to continue your reading sessions around the pool, at the beach, and other places where there is water around. Other features include adjustable warm light support and 16GB of storage for a more comfortable night reading experience.

As well as a regular variant of the Paperwhite, Signature Edition This adds wireless charging support and auto-adjusting light for better visibility in different lighting conditions. It also has twice the storage space than the regular version and is available in a metallic finish in three color options.

Amazon Kindle Printer

Amazon

Kindle Scribe holds a special place in Amazon’s eReader portfolio. It’s not just an eReader, it’s also a note-taking device. So, if you’re into both of those things, Scribe is a pretty good option. It has the largest screen of any Kindle at 10.2 inches and has a different design than other Amazon eReaders. You get uniform white bezels around the screen and an extra thick border on the left edge. This thicker frame is supposed to help you hold it while using it.

Scribe’s note-taking capabilities are the biggest difference that separates it from other Kindles. You can jot down your thoughts in the built-in notepad and bookmark imported PDFs or Kindle eBooks. There are also AI-powered tools to summarize notes or convert handwritten notes into text written in a font. The company also includes a pen for taking notes.

Otherwise, it has the same features as the Kindle Paperwhite, except for water resistance and the lack of wireless charging. You can purchase Scribe with three storage options.

Amazon Kindle Colorsoft

Amazon

Kindle Colorsoft is the newest addition to Amazon’s eReader portfolio and the company’s first color eReader. It has a 7-inch color E-ink display that can produce full color or black and white content. Screen resolution is 150 ppi in color and 300 ppi in black and white.

Currently only available in the Signature Edition, Colorsoft shares most features with the Paperwhite Signature Edition. For example, you get the same front design, 32GB of storage, wireless charging, auto-adjusting front light, adjustable warm light, and IPX8 water resistance. It also has a maximum brightness of 94 nits, the same as every other Kindle. The only real differences between the Paperwhite and Colorsoft’s signature versions are the lower eight-week battery life and the latter’s color display.

Color eReaders are perfect for reading comics, manga, magazines, and children’s books because the color screen brings visuals to life with vibrant colors.

Note that Colorsoft didn’t have the best launch for the Kindle as initial buyers. I noticed a yellow band at the bottom of the screen. As of mid-November 2024, the company is in the process of developing a fix and has delayed shipping of the eReader. Existing owners are offered the option of replacement or refund. If you’re tempted by this eReader, you may want to wait for the fix before ordering. You may also want to consider color eReaders from other manufacturers, such as Kobo.
