Israel says Haifa synagogue hit by ‘rocket bombardment’

Two people were injured when a synagogue was hit in the northern coastal city of Haifa on Saturday following “heavy rocket bombardment” by Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group, the Israeli military said.

“This is another clear example of Hezbollah deliberately targeting Israeli civilians,” the army said in a statement. Separately, the military said it had intercepted some of “about 10 bullets” crossing into Israel from Lebanon.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for several rocket attacks against northern Israel, saying it targeted military facilities including a naval base in the Haifa area.

Air raid sirens were activated in Haifa and surrounding settlements in northern Israel on Saturday, the army said.

Israeli emergency service provider Magen Adam David said its teams had found “no victims” from rocket shrapnel at this stage.

However, it was stated that five people, aged between 16 and 70, were “slightly injured” while running to the shelter. They were taken to hospital.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli army announced the death of a soldier killed during fighting in southern Lebanon.

The soldier’s death means that 48 Israeli soldiers have been killed in clashes with Hezbollah since September 30, when Israel sent ground forces to Lebanon.

On September 23, Israel stepped up airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and a week later deployed troops to the south of the country, following relatively low-level cross-border contacts in which Hezbollah said it supported Hamas, which was fighting Israel in Gaza. sent.
