Supreme Court judge Gregory Geason resigns after accusations

Justice Gregory Geason has resigned from his position as a Supreme Court Judge in Tasmania with immediate effect.

Attorney General Guy Barnett confirmed the resignation on Monday.

“The government has received confirmation that Justice Gregory Geason has tendered his resignation as interim judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania with immediate effect,” he said in a brief statement.

Geason was appointed to the Supreme Court in November 2017.

He was admitted to office in 1987 and previously worked as a Crown Prosecutor in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Disgraced Justice Gregory Geason will be removed from his position at the Supreme Court of Tasmania if he continues to delay his resignation, the attorney general has said.

Attorney General Guy Barnett said Friday that he will table a motion in the House of Assembly calling for the Governor to remove Geason from office if he does not resign “before the next day of parliamentary sitting.”

“I note that the charges against Judge Gregory Geason at Hobart Magistrates’ Court were recently finalized,” Barnett said.

Earlier this week, Geason’s lawyer stated that the judge intends to resign ‘immediately’.

However, a Supreme Court spokesman said Geason had notified Chief Justice Alan Blow of his intention to resign but had not yet taken formal action on that decision.
