Sources close to the investigation revealed that one of the critical witnesses was the judicial magistrate who was present during the inquest of the victim’s body. The second important witness is the cameraman who filmed both the investigation and the autopsy.

To ensure confidentiality and avoid media interference, the entire hearing will be held in camera, meaning only those directly involved in the case will be allowed into the courtroom. Since the trial began on November 11, all hearings have been closed to the public and media.

Sources said that the witnesses of nine people, including the victim’s parents, have been heard in the special court so far.

Three people are currently in judicial custody in connection with the rape and murder case. The main accused, Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer, is named as the “sole prime accused” in the initial chargesheet filed by the CBI. The CBI is investigating the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

Two others are also in custody: Sandip Ghosh, former and controversial principal of RG Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, former officer-in-charge (SHO) of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial investigation by Kolkata Police before the CBI took over.

The CBI may include additional charges against Ghosh and Mondal in a supplementary chargesheet to be submitted later.

The defendant made allegations against the former police commissioner

On the second day of the hearing, Sanjay Roy made statements to the press outside the court. He alleged that former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal conspired to falsely implicate him in the case. Since then, Roy has been driven to and from court in a private vehicle with tinted windows, preventing him from speaking to the media.
