Apple released a number of new AI features for the iOS 18.1 update last month, including AI notification summaries with Apple Intelligence. While the feature uses AI to summarize notifications in a meaningful way so users can quickly scan key pointers, many users have shared examples of how inaccurate and unrealistic these summaries can often be.

Andrew Schmidt, himself a techie, remembers the Apple AI summary his mother sent him saying, “This walk almost killed me!” He posted a screenshot of X analyzing a text message that said. “He attempted suicide but recovered and went hiking in Redlands and Palm Springs.”

Notifications from security cameras often alarmed people with the wording. “Multiple people spotted at the entrance,” one user said, with the user noting that the AI sounded like it was in the middle of a “home invasion.”

Some users also gave examples of dry and humorous-looking AI summaries of their messages on a dating app. “Date offered, initially declined, phone number provided,” one notice read. Another user she broke up with said she woke up to a notification saying “I’m not feeling any romantic sparks, sorry for ending things.”

Users can also choose to turn off notification summaries for text messages if they wish, by going to Settings > Notifications > Summarization Previews and disabling Messages.

Other Apple Intelligence features, such as AI in Siri, will arrive with the iOS 18.2 update next year.
