Son of Norwegian crown princess arrested on suspicion of rape and domestic violence

OSLO, November 19 — The 27-year-old son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested on suspicion of rape, Norwegian police said today.

Police said in a statement that Marius Borg Hoiby, born from a relationship before Mette-Marit’s marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001, was arrested last night.

The statement said the man was suspected of violating the criminal law by “engaging in sexual intercourse with a person who is unconscious or unable to resist this act for other reasons.”

“What the police can say about rape is that it was a sexual act that occurred without sexual intercourse. The victim is said to have been unable to resist the act,” police said. he said.

Police said Borg Hoiby was detained following a nighttime fight at a woman’s home in Oslo on August 4 and charged with causing bodily harm to the resident with whom he was having an affair.

In Norwegian media reports, it was stated that the police found a knife stuck in one of the walls of the woman’s bedroom at that time.

He was arrested again in September for violating a restraining order.

He was in a car with the alleged victim of the August incident when he was arrested Monday, according to police.

Police have previously said suspicions surrounding the August incident now include domestic abuse.

Police said they have not yet decided whether to take him into custody.

Hoiby was born in 1997 from a relationship before Mette-Marit married Crown Prince Haakon, heir to the Norwegian throne, in 2001.

He and his half-siblings (20-year-old Princess Ingrid Alexandra and 18-year-old Prince Sverre Magnus) were raised together by Mette-Marit and Haakon.

Unlike them, he does not have an official public duty. —AFP
