1 Dead Among Carrot Recalls in 18 States Due to E. Coli Concerns

While you’re getting ready Thanksgiving Double-check the carrots you buy to roast a turkey, make gravy, or caramelize for the holidays: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and a well-known carrot supplier recommend to remember various brands of organic carrots (baby and whole) due to potential coli pollution.

according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Carrots have been potentially linked to an E. coli outbreak in 18 states, resulting in 15 hospitalizations and one death so far.

As of November 16, Grimmway Farms has recalled vegetable bags shipped to retail stores in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada. While the affected products should have already been pulled from grocery store shelves, they may still be found in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers, according to the FDA. So, for peace of mind, you may want to rummage through the produce drawer.

Affected products are:

  • Organic whole carrots that do not have an expiration date on the bag but can be purchased between August 14 and October 23, 2024.

  • Organic baby carrots with expiration dates between September 11 and November 12, 2024.

Affected brands include 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organics, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans . Healthy Pantry.

The FDA is concerned that the above vegetables may be contaminated with E. Coli, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. E. Coli symptoms usually appear three to four days after consuming the affected food. Mayo Clinicand may include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.

If you think you may have any of the affected carrots, the CDC and FDA recommend discarding them and not consuming them. The FDA also recommends disinfecting surfaces touched by carrots if you think you have any of the affected vegetables. If you’re concerned about getting sick or getting sick, the FDA says to contact a medical professional.
