Who is Ramon Rivera, New York’s alleged serial stabber?

Although suspect Ramon Rivera, 51, is currently in custody and facing murder charges, questions arise about his extensive criminal history.

“Three New Yorkers. Unprovoked attacks that left us searching for answers as to how something like this could happen,” NYC Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference. He called the violence “a clear-cut example” of failures in the criminal justice system and elsewhere.

What happened in the stabbing incident in New York?

Surveillance footage shows Rivera donning gloves and pulling a knife from his backpack shortly before the attacks. Police said the gloves seen in the footage matched gloves and two knives found at the scene.

Who are the victims?

The violent spree began around 8:30 a.m. near West 19th Street and 8th Avenue, where Rivera allegedly stabbed a construction worker, 36-year-old Angel Lata Landi, in the stomach. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital but could not be saved.

About two hours later, police said Rivera struck again on East 30th Street near FDR Drive, attacking a 68-year-old man who was fishing along the East River. The man also died from his injuries.

Just 30 minutes later, Rivera allegedly stabbed a 36-year-old woman named Augustin Wilma multiple times at 42nd Street and First Avenue. He was pronounced dead at Cornell Medical Center.

Police arrested the suspect, later identified as Rivera, shortly after the final stabbing, near the United Nations building, just a few blocks from the scene. He was found covered in blood.

Rivera, who is believed to be homeless, now faces murder charges. Authorities say he has a criminal record that spans three states and was convicted in a case just a few months ago. He was also arrested in a grand theft case last month. Authorities also said Rivera suffered from serious mental health issues.
