Suspect shot by police officers in Napier taken to hospital

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A man wanted on domestic violence charges was shot after officers returned fire during a short walk in the Napier neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

The Metro Nashville Police Department dispatched its officers to Lewis Street after a woman called 911 just before 1 a.m. and said her ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Knykholas Lane, was trying to break into her apartment. Lane and the woman have a child together, according to MNPD.

MNPD said officers knew the address and the suspect because of the Nov. 14 incident in which the woman said Lane punched her in the face and held her in the bedroom before getting up.

When officers arrived, they found Lane running away along the road. Dashcam footage shows officers following Lane in their patrol car and yelling at him to stop running. Lane ignored the officers’ commands and quickened his pace, forcing an officer to exit the vehicle and pursue him on foot.

Shortly after the officer began pursuing him, Lane fired a semi-automatic pistol, prompting return fire from the officer. Lane was shot in the leg and hip, and body camera footage shows him lying face down in the grass as officers approached.

Lane was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for his injuries and remains hospitalized. No injuries to officers were reported.

Lane has a criminal history in Nashville: He was convicted of two counts of aggravated burglary in March 2023 and received three years probation for those crimes. MNPD said he was arrested for violating parole on Nov. 12, two days before the alleged incident with his ex-girlfriend, which led to him being charged with domestic assault and false imprisonment.

The officer who returned fire and attacked Lane has been with MNPD for three years and will be on administrative duty while the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducts its investigation into the incident.
