Latest weather: Travel disruption, schools closed and three warnings issued in one hour due to freezing snowfall United Kingdom | UK News

The Met Office issues weather warnings through the National Severe Weather Warning Service when severe weather conditions have the potential to affect the UK.

These warnings are colored yellow, amber or red depending on the combination of impacts the weather may have and the likelihood of those impacts occurring.

Here is the meaning of the colors…

Yellow warning

Most of these warnings are issued where weather conditions are likely to cause some low-level impacts, including travel disruption in a few locations.

Many people will be able to continue their daily routines, but there will be those who will be directly affected.

Other yellow warnings are issued when weather could bring more severe impacts to the majority of people, but the certainty of these impacts is much lower.

yellow warning

This means there is an increased likelihood of impacts from severe weather that could disrupt your plans.

There is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power outages and potential risks to life and property.

If an area is placed under a yellow alert, residents should consider changing their plans and taking action to protect themselves and their property.

red warning

Hazardous weather is expected and if you haven’t already, you should take action now to protect yourself and others from the impact of severe weather.

A risk to life is very likely, causing significant disruption to travel, energy supplies and possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure.
