Latest weather: New snow and ice warnings issued; disruption of travel on roads and trains; schools closed | UK News

Many parts of the UK are experiencing freezing conditions this evening.

We’ll take a break from our broadcast for now, but here’s what you need to know this evening:

Six weather alerts available

There are six snow and ice yellow weather warnings covering England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland:

  • West Scotland – snow and ice warning comes into force from 7pm today and will remain in force until 10am tomorrow;
  • London, Midlands and south – this icy warning remains in force until 10am tomorrow;
  • Northern Scotland – this is a snow and ice warning and is in effect until 10am tomorrow;
  • Northern Ireland – snow and ice warning in place until 10am tomorrow;
  • East coast of England – yellow weather warning for snow and ice in force until 12pm tomorrow;
  • Wales – snow and ice warning will be in effect until 23.59 today.

Amber cold weather health alert

The UK Health Safety Agency has issued its first yellow cold weather health warning of the season; Warning conditions can be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly.

The amber warning covers the east and north of England, the Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber.

More than 200 schools were closed

More than 200 schools were closed due to bad weather conditions.

Around 140 have closed in Wales, around 50 in the West Midlands and around 20 in Derbyshire.

travel interruption

Thousands of train passengers experienced disruption this morning due to weather conditions.

As of 11am on Tuesday, 64 of a total of 120 services scheduled by East Midlands Railway had been canceled or delayed by at least half an hour.

National Rail this evening reported further disruption to trains in Lincolnshire, Peterborough, Scotland, North Yorkshire and the Midlands.
