MSU OC Brian Lindgren Provides Much-Needed Answers About Last Offensive Pain

EAST LANSING, Michigan — When everything was going well, we saw how good Michigan State’s offense could be. But when mistakes and lack of execution come into play, this offense frankly doesn’t fare well against Big Ten competition.

That’s been the case in the Spartans’ last three losses, especially their last two. For Michigan State to win, the offense will need to be firing on all cylinders, just like it did against Iowa.

Spartans offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren addressed the issues when he spoke to the media on Tuesday.

Below is a transcript of Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith’s opening remarks from Monday’s press conference:

“Okay, quick turnaround. But going back after fully digesting the tape on Saturday, the lack of complementary football, actually all three phases were not enough. There were some really good things in all three phases, but not enough to achieve that.” We got much closer in the fourth quarter and eventually won the game. And again, credit to Illinois, they did a good job schematically in a few ways, especially making adjustments in coverage a few times because we couldn’t get home. On third down, they blocked really well and their quarterback made some good throws when needed, especially on offense, we need to get some things better. It wasn’t as good as I thought. There wasn’t much good on the pitch, Aidan (Chiles) could have protected the ball a few times better. And we will need it. In terms of special teams, we had to practice on the punt — look at the distance, the net when we ran the ball, how much, so we lost that end. the return of things, their punt, our punt. Again, after the previous week we were facing protection issues, now we had a bit more cooldown time and eliminated some stealth areas in special teams. So like I said, quick turnaround is going forward. Training was held this morning. Friends are back to work. There’s definitely some disappointment and frustration, but when I looked at the work, I thought they put that effort, energy and emotion into the execution today. Because it’s a quick turnaround and it felt like the guys were moving at full speed. I liked the work we did today. Because when you look at Purdue and you watch this tape, they were able to move the ball. They received lighter points due to their struggles in some red zones like us. You look at their schedule and the opponents they play. It’s a group of five best teams and that’s what this league boils down to. So we know we’re going to face a tough challenge on Friday night.”
