Additional investigations into UI Greek Life organizations

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The University of Iowa has investigated three other Greek life organizations for hazing and alcohol-related issues since September of this year.

The University of Iowa Office of Student Responsibility received a report accusing Alpha Sigma Phi of “blindfolding new members at dinner and requiring new members to drink water with vinegar in it.”

The letter explained that in a separate incident, members were made to drink half a gallon of milk and forced to exercise vigorously until they vomited.

The department has been temporarily suspended while the investigation continues.

During a meeting with leaders, a second report was discussed stating that new members were “asked to wear costumes and engage in degrading activities.”

At the meeting, documents showed a member of Alpha Sigma Phi explained that adding vinegar to water at dinner was not part of a ritual but was meant as a joke. One member also said that the milk was used to counteract the hot sauce foods members were eating as part of the “Hot Ones” challenge. The new members were then made to exercise and it was acknowledged that some vomited, but not everyone did.

On September 4, UI’s Office of Student Responsibility received a letter accusing Phi Kappa Psi of hosting a tailgate at 300 Melrose on August 31. The report stated that neighbors complained to the city of Iowa City. The municipality informed the university about the incident.

“Attendees were dumping on neighbor’s property and some were seen urinating and littering on other properties,” the complaint stated. The report also stated that the participants were given alcohol.

Another complaint was filed against the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, accusing him of hazing. Records TV9 obtained detailed information that the sorority “creates barriers and prevents student participation for the purpose of initiation or membership.” “There are concerns about the exclusion of your regional counsel and the desire to ‘leave no paper trail’ in the process,” the report continued.
